Journaling for Mental Health

– In fact, I would venture to say when the intention of journaling is to improve our mental health, we may do ourselves a disservice by trying to make it “pretty” or “perfect.” Incorporating expressive arts to improve mental health is most effective when we focus on the process, not the outcome. Write, draw, move – express yourself freely. Without fear of judgment (from yourself or others). Free flowing thought.
Punctuation? Not needed. Pretty font? Maybe, if you have time, but is that going to be therapeutic? Or will one mistake lead you to become frustrated and tear up the page?
Go with the flow. Write about how you feel. Validate yourself. Read over what you’ve written, and ask yourself how you may respond to a friend telling you the same thing. Write how you’d respond to a friend.
There’s no “wrong way” to journal. You can’t fail.
